Where Required?

Each model code, including the LSC, requires specific occupancies to have exit devices based on occupant loads related to exit doors. Table I compares these relationships and differences between codes. Refer to the actual code section for specific requirements. Note: It is not uncommon for occupancies listed in the table to be housed in buildings classified as another occupancy, i.e. a lecture hall (assembly) in a business occupancy used for educational purposes at the college level.

Note 1: Group A, Div 3 occupancies and churches — Panic hardware may be omitted from main exit doors, and a keyed lock provided if a 1" high sign reading “This Door Must Remain Unlocked During Business Hours,” is provided. When unlocked, doors must swing freely without a latch. When pairs of doors are used, one leaf shall have no latch, the second leaf shall lock into the first leaf, and when unlocked, both leaves shall unlock simultaneously. Flush, edge or surface bolts or any other type of device that may be used to close or restrain the door shall be prohibited.

Note 2: Panic Hardware shall be waived on gates surrounding stadiums provided a safe dispersal area 50 ft. away from stadium is provided, having an area based on 3 sq. ft. per person as surge space.

Note 3: Group I, Div 3 occupancies — approved locks or safety devices may be used where necessary to forcibly restrain the personal liberties of inmates and patients.
