What Doors Require Exit
Devices?
The preceding table shows when exit devices are
required, but it is necessary to understand the
exit system to determine where they are required
within the building. While calculating the occupant
load is the design team’s responsibility, it is
important to understand how it is determined. Codes
determine occupant loads based on a square-foot-per-occupant
figure, as shown in Table II.

[Table 806.1.2]
Occupant load does not apply, except for those
portions of buildings used for assembly or
educational, as follows:
Assembly:
- 7 net sq. ft./person: Concentrated (no
fixed chairs)
- 15 net sq. ft./person: Unconcentrated
(tables & chairs)
- 3 net sq. ft./person: Standing space
Educational:
- 20 net sq. ft./person: Classrooms
- 50 net sq. ft./person: Vocational Rooms

Assembly:
- 7 sq. ft./person: Concentrated use,
i.e. Auditoriums, churches, dance floors,
lodge rooms, reviewing stands, stadiums.
- 15 sq. ft./person: Unconcentrated use,
i.e. Conference rooms, exhibit rooms,
gymnasiums, lounges, skating rinks.
- 3 sq. ft./person: Standing space
Educational:
- Occupant load does not apply to exit
device placement.
