Exit
Devices When? Where? Why?
Introduction
While the term "exit device"
is familiar in the door and hardware industry, it
is referred to in building codes as “panic hardware.”
Panic hardware came about, as the name implies,
in response to the panic resulting from several
disastrous fires that took hundreds of lives. The
term "exit device" describes either panic hard-ware
or fire exit hardware. These two types are applied
under different conditions but are similar in nature
and perform the same function: allowing persons
to exit safely from a building or area.
